FAQ
Who is
ThePrePaidGuru.com?
ThePrePaidGuru is a
retailer of prepaid calling cards or phone cards. Our mission is to
offer our customers the best value international calling in a
completely predictable way. To do that we source calling cards from
tier 1 providers and we remove 100% of the guesswork
from buying a calling card. We answer the simple question that every
calling card user asks: “how many minutes do I get on this card?”

How does the
ThePrePaidGuru.com work?
Its simple. You
describe in four or five questions how you typically use your calling
card. Then, using this information, ThePrePaidGuru inserts it
into our proprietary calculator to estimate how many minutes you will
receive from each card that we carry. And then we show you all the
cards, arranged from most minutes to least minutes, for you to make
your choice.
The
calculator takes into account all the fees that providers
typically charge. However, as these inputs can change, and how you
actually use your card can change, and some fees are not clearly stated
by the provider, please remember that our results are an estimate, not
a guarantee.
You will notice that we
do not carry a bafflingly large number of cards. That is because we
only carry cards that will provide good value and quality. And we show
you the exact card that will be best for you. We are not like other
sites that may try and confuse you.

Phone Card Terms
Below are definitions
of some of the common terms you will see on our site

when a telephone call starts or ends. The fee is charged whether the
call is short or long. ThePrepaidGuru calculator takes these fees into
account in determining the best card for you.
Payphone
Surcharge
An additional fee
imposed for handling a phone call made from a payphone.
Minute
Rounding
Providers round up your
minutes, making your calls more expensive than you would expect. This
is shown in the following examples:
3-Minute Rounding: A
phone call lasting 10 minutes will be billed for 12 minutes.
3-Minute Rounding: A

ThePrepaidGuru calculator takes

Card
Expiration
All cards have an
expiration date. Any unused minutes on a phone card will be forfeited
at the point of expiration. The expiration date is included in the card
details. They vary from 90 days to 365 from first use, typically.
Maintenance
Fee
Many providers now
charge a maintenance fee at set intervals. As long as there is a
balance on the card, it is susceptible to these fees. The fee is
typically deducted immediately after your first phone call (if a
balance remains) or within 24hours of the first call, and again at the
advertised schedule for as long as a balance exists. ThePrepaidGuru
calculator takes these fees into account in determining the best card
for you.
PIN
A Personal
Identification Number (PIN) is the unique code associated with an
individual prepaid phone card. This is the number you will have to key
in to access your minutes.
Access
Number
The phone number you
dial to access the providers platform. After dialing the access number
you will be prompted for your PIN and then you will be able to dial
your call. Access numbers can be local or 1-800. If both kinds of
access are offered, the 1-800 access will carry additional fees.
Provider
The company that
creates the prepaid phone cards and provides the network that your
calls go through.
Service
fee/ Surcharge
An additional fee for
providing service. Many providers quote a minute rate, as well as a
percentage fee that you have to add to that. ThePrepaidGuru calculator
takes these fees into account in determining the best card for
you.
Clean
The industry term for a
phone card having no additional carrier fees beyond the advertised rate
per minute. ThePrepaidGuru calculator allows you to compare
clean cards with other cards.
